Easter is my favorite holiday. Whenever I say that, some people are like “What about Christmas?!” Believe me, at Christmastime I’m basically the female version of Buddy the Elf. Okay, maybe I’m not as huge on Santa, but hey. I love the decorations, the songs, the baking, the lights, the anticipation...I love it all. However, it’s just not Easter. I know Easter doesn’t have the hype and anticipation that Christmas has, but that’s part of what makes it my favorite. I love that the meaning of Easter doesn’t have as much of a chance to get lost in all the hooplah.
This year was the first Easter with baby girl. Well, technically last Easter was, but as she was just a little peanut in the womb, this was her first as an outside baby. She didn’t have a basket, save for the one my mom got her, with cute little gifts. We didn’t buy jelly beans or Reese’s eggs. We didn’t even color eggs - mostly because we are not the biggest fan of eating them, so why waste? There were no bunny decorations or pastel colored wreaths in our house. The only decoration we put up for this season was our Resurrection scene (think Nativity, but for Easter.) We didn’t attend any Easter egg hunts or Easter parties. Saturday, we watched The Greatest Story Ever Told. Then Sunday, we went to church, came home and had a nice meal, and then enjoyed the day together.
I enjoy this holiday the most because of what it means. I enjoy not having too many distractions from it so I can quiet my heart and be reverent, reflecting on and rejoicing in the magnitude of what happened all those years ago. I hope and pray that while Christmas is an important time and will bring all kinds of fun and excitement, our baby girl will also grow up learning to love the seemingly quiet wonder that is Easter.
