Please Write In Complete Stories

6/22/2015

Lately I've found that many times, when I consider downloading a free e-book, it's part of a "series". I find myself interested in the story, so I mentally thank the author for making the first book free and begin to read. I get drawn into the story, and just when it's getting good, it ends. FRUSTRATING!
Don't get me wrong, I enjoy a good series as much as the next person. However, what I'm describing can hardly be described as such. Sure, a series tells a story that is only truly complete when you've finished all of the volumes, but each separate part typically has a story of its own. For example, the Harry Potter series wasn't complete until book seven, but even book one had a plot that was resolved at the end. J.K. Rowling didn't cut it off right after the detention in the Forbidden Forest.
Writers, I understand, especially among self-published authors, that there is a need to build a reader base, but why these incomplete stories? It may seem like a good marketing tactic, but when I encounter this kind of thing, I feel tricked, not drawn in to your writing. Why not write a complete, short story attached to the series somehow? I know I'd rather read a good short story from you, get a taste of your writing, and then pay a few dollars for the books in your series. Or why not just make the first complete book of your series free?
Please, writers, no more of this nonsense where you have a complete, long story, but break it up into several terribly incomplete stories with cliffhangers rather than endings. That may work well in television, but it doesn't work so well with books.

Review: The Pepper in the Gumbo

Nearly every day I skim through emails which have e-book deals listed. One day a few weeks ago, The Pepper in the Gumbo was listed for free. The blurb attached to it said how fans of You’ve Got Mail would like this story. I can’t remember the exact wording, but it sounded a lot like the plot of the movie. I didn’t really like the movie, but part of me wondered just how alike the movie and this book would be, so I downloaded it.
As I read, I was quite astonished - the book seemed like an updated version of the movie. Alice was a local bookstore owner who hated technology, and Paul owned a large electronic/gaming company that was about to open a store near Alice’s. Of course, they met each other, didn’t exactly hit it off, and of course Alice was none too happy with Paul’s new store being opened. The two also talk online - and you guessed it - Alice doesn’t know she’s talking to Paul, but Paul knows he’s talking to Alice. They set up a meeting, and Paul plans on telling Alice he’s the guy from online, but Alice doesn’t get it. So, on with the drama.
What made me chuckle was that at some point, Tom Hanks is referred to, and at another point the characters even joke about how much this situation is like You’ve Got Mail.
Near plagiarism aside, this book wasn’t the most enjoyable read. I found myself having to force myself to read it in its entirety. It was filled with extraneous details that made it seem more like reading diary entries than meaningful plot points. While it makes sense that the characters bonded over works they’ve read, they were referenced and quoted too much - it made reading the book tedious.
Then of course, there were tropes present. For instance, Alice had a boyfriend at the beginning of the book, who was of course, one of the most unpleasant characters and really served no purpose other than to create tension with the main characters’ relationship. Also, later in the book, when Alice finally realizes Paul is the man she’s been talking to online, and has also done many wonderfully kind acts for her, Alice assumes he has terrible motives.. It’s the typical scenario you see in romance movies - someone is hiding something and twenty minutes before the end of the movie the other finds out and their relationship is threatened. Like in too many of those movies, the fact that the one who discovers the secret is hurt and offended is just ridiculous.  Don’t worry though, they get back together.
Anyway, point is, you might as well just watch You’ve Got Mail. It’s a slightly less tedious telling of the same story.

Review: Turned by Kaylee Rae

This week, I read the book Turned: An Undead Novel by Kaylee Rae. I hadn’t really read any apocalyptic works, so when this showed up as a deal, I thought I’d give it a shot. This book is labeled as “a suspenseful & thrilling apocalyptic zombie romance”. This sounded like a tall order, and I was hoping the author was able to fill it well.
Without trying to give too many major spoilers, the story follows Retta and Jasper as they struggle to survive in the apocalyptic world. They start out in a community of people who have rather banded together in order to survive. They then try to make their way to Washington, in order to go to Canada, where they hope to live normal lives.
The plot is interesting enough and I could have really enjoyed it, had it not been for several issues. Firstly, there were typos, misspellings, and grammatical errors throughout the work. Also, the book was riddled with inconsistencies. For example, a character is diagnosed with an illness “the day before”, but then paragraphs later we read about what has been happening “since he was diagnosed.” There’s also the unfortunate mishap of the wrong name being used for a character. Another problem was how a pregnancy unfolded in the story. The young woman isn’t sure if she’s pregnant, but also states that it would have happened ten weeks ago. There is no mention, nor question by other characters, of a missed period during that time, when surely that would have occurred at least once. This is off-putting; it makes it seems like the author didn’t care enough to thoroughly research, but rather expected readers to just go along with it.
My main issue was the use of rape in the story. The main female character is raped on a regular basis for a time, and yet other than having a hatred for the man who did it, she does not seem to be affected by it. Handling this in such a fashion is inappropriate, inconsiderate, and potentially hurtful to those who have actually endured this tragedy. There is no need for it to take place - the only consequence this put in motion could have easily been written in a different, less offensive way. As it is, the rape is present in the story, and has no other point than to create extra drama.
The ending is, in my humble opinion, an interesting and fitting one for a thriller, but the rest of the book took away from my appreciation of it. Unfortunate really. If this book was both developmentally edited and given a copy edit, it could be vastly improved and even be a great read.

Not Both

Many times, when I sit down to write, I find it very difficult to work on my WIP. So lately, I've taken to using writing prompts, just to write something. Today I got the idea to post some flash fiction - perhaps I'll start doing Flash Tuesdays. (Why yes I did decide that because The Flash is on Tuesdays, though I have yet to watch it.) Anyway...here's the first.

Not Both

The doctor put his hand on her arm and said gently, “You or the baby will survive. Not both. I’m sorry.” Any response she could have given got caught in her throat as the doctor continued, “I’m really sorry to have to tell you that. I’ll leave the two of you alone, I know this is difficult to swallow. Take as much time as you need, we don’t need the room the rest of the day.” She gave the couple a pitying smile and gently closed the door behind her.
“Well, there’s that.” Jennifer put her hands on her large belly, looking down in shock.
“No, that can’t be that. All the medicine today - there has to be a way. I’m not willing to lose either of you.” Chad got up and took his wife in his arms and started whispering a prayer for the two most important people in his life.
As he prayed, Jennifer said a silent prayer herself. However, her’s was one of surrender. Yes, this was a shock, but not because she had a big decision to make. She had made up her mind the moment the words were out of the doctor’s mouth. The only thing she had to decide now was how to tell the man she loved more than life that he was going to be a single father.

Not My First Mother's Day

Yesterday was an absolutely wonderful day. I was spoiled and got to spend the day with my two favorite people. However, several times I was wished a “Happy first Mother’s Day.” Every time, it kind of bothered me. This was not my first Mother’s Day. I haven’t lost a child (God bless and comfort those who have!) and I do only have one daughter who was born this past October, but last May was my first Mother’s Day, not this May.
I do believe this is becoming a pet peeve of mine. I know that a lot of people don’t consider a baby a person until they are born, and there is a tendency to not think of pregnant women as mothers...but they are! The moment my child was conceived, I became a mother. The moment I saw the positive test, I knew it. From that moment, I have loved her, prayed for her, worried about her, taken care of her, dreamed and hoped for her, and did everything I could to make sure she was growing and safe. Pregnant women are very much mothers, so if you are expecting, I hope you had a wonderful Mother’s Day yesterday.
On a more sappy note, yesterday wasn’t my first Mother’s Day because every day feels like Mother’s Day. I truly mean that. I have a husband who loves me so selflessly that I feel spoiled, and I am beyond ecstatic to be able to spend my days with my little girl. They always make me feel like I am the most special woman in the world.  Also, as much as Mother’s Day is about recognizing your mother - and I have the best one - since becoming a mother myself, for me, the day makes me reflect on my little joy, as well. Every day is like that for me.  I know how blessed I am to have her in my life and have the honor and weighty responsibility of raising her. I never want to take her for granted, and try to make it a point every day, to think on that so I be the best example of a woman, wife, and mother as I can for her. She is my Mother's Day gift every day.

A New Book is Released!!

My husband has published his book today, and I am so excited for him and for every reader to delve into the story! Gods on the Mountain by Ben Willoughby
http://www.amazon.com/Gods-Mountain-Ben-Willoughby-ebook/dp/B00WUN600O/ref=la_B00WV2OQI2_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1430334249&sr=1-2
I've had the pleasure of hearing this story in every step of the process. I got a first glimpse into the world he built when my husband initially started developing it. Even the world intrigued me, and I couldn't wait to hear what stories would come out of it. Then, my husband would read chapters to me as he was writing, and even in the very first draft, I couldn't wait to hear more. I like to think it's thanks to my pestering that he wrote it all so quickly.  I had the pleasure of reading it, editing it, reading it, editing it again, and reading it. Each time, I loved it more and realized deeper elements to the story and characters than I had before.
If you are looking for an entertaining fantasy story with well-developed characters you are bound to get attached to, I highly recommend this book!!

S is for Selfish Suicide?

4/22/2015

Right after Robin Williams died, someone on my facebook list posted their thoughts. They said that they couldn’t believe that everyone was so upset over and talking about his death because suicide was “nothing but selfish.” That made a lot of people upset, myself included. It was one of those incidents where it was very difficult to keep quiet, but at the same time I knew that commenting would just create more drama. I wrote many responses, only to delete each and every one of them before I hit reply.
I am a suicide survivor. By that, I do not mean that I have attempted - I have found that people mistakenly understand that term as such. I mean that someone close to me has killed themselves. Unfortunately I know three people who have - a friend's brother, a best friend’s mom, and one of my own brothers. The pain of experiencing such a loss is unlike any other pain, and it is easy, while in the midst of that pain, to fall into thinking that suicide is selfish.
To survivors,  it can be hard to understand how someone could not think of those who love them before they take their own life. To those who have been fortunate enough not to experience this tragedy, I reckon it’s pretty easy to think that the one taking their own life is thinking only of themselves. To be fair, I’m sure there have been some selfish suicides in the past. I don’t actually know who would fit this category, but I’ll grant that it could happen. However, the majority are not.
I know there are those who take their own life after an event which served as a catalyst, but more often than not, even when there is an event present, there are still additional underlying issues. So many have mental illnesses, or are otherwise not in their “right mind”. To them, all they are focusing on is a way to stop the pain. I also maintain that they do think of others - they honestly believe that taking themselves out of their loved ones’ lives is doing them a favor.
I’m not by any means saying that since suicide is not selfish that it is acceptable. It is a tragedy no one should have to face, in any way. However, to say that we know precisely what that person was thinking, feeling, and intending is arrogant. Furthermore, to state such an opinion does nothing to give support to survivors of suicide. For my own part, reading the post I mentioned before only made me grieve more, even nearly ten years later. It made me second guess memories of my brother, and tempted me to think less than highly of him. While I’m not one to put on rose-colored glasses and pretend my brother was perfect, I’d much rather remember the good qualities about him. I don’t think I’m being too presumptuous when I say that others would prefer the same.
All this to say, please think before you declare suicide is nothing but selfish. Those who have committed suicide can’t hear you anyway, and those who are considering attempting need help and healing, not more pain.

End rant

This post was supposed to be made yesterday, but I got caught up in one thing or another and never got around to it. Woops! So, today I shall make two posts.

I know a few people who will never reread anything, and to be quite honest, I think that’s just crazy. There are too many hidden treasures in books to not go digging for them as many times as possible. If I enjoy a book, I will reread it at least once.  If I love a book, I’ll reread it more than that. My favorites, I reread regularly.

Some books I reread frequently are:
Harry Potter (all of them)
Catcher in the Rye
The Outsiders
East of Eden (really and John Steinbeck
A Time to Kill

What books do you reread a lot?

Q is for Quiet

I don’t really do well with quiet. There are times when I like silence to concentrate and times when I try to discipline myself to be without noise. Most of the time, however, I need some sort of sound. I turn on the tv and have a movie or show playing in the background, put music on, or at night, request that my husband types. It comes from the fact that I’m the youngest of eight and there was always commotion in my house growing up. I’m so used to noise, that if it’s completely quiet, oftentimes that creeps me out and I get a little scared. It’s pathetic, perhaps, but true.

Anyone else need noise? Or are you all the type who like silence?

“Does this coffee taste weird to you?” It was a question she had never asked in her life, given that she was practically addicted to the stuff.
“No, tastes fine to me.” He continued to sip on his, while she put her mug down and didn’t pick it up again for the rest of the morning.

Later that day, she was in the kitchen, getting out the fixings to make dinner for the two of them. She looked at the ingredients on the counter and shook her head. I would give anything not to have to eat this, she thought. She went out to the living room, where her husband sat, reading. “I don’t know what it is, but I have the biggest craving for Chinese food.”
Her husband had always spoiled her, and this time was no different. She cleaned up the counter, deciding to make the planned meal the next day, while her husband went to get take-out.

“Want your fortune cookie?” She held it out to him, and he took it and opened it. After enjoying the crunchy little “dessert” he read its contents:
Tomorrow will be an important day for you.
The couple never took fortune cookies seriously; they were just good fun, but jokingly they wondered what the day would hold.

She woke unusually early the next morning with that nagging feeling that something was different. Something had changed. The smell of the coffee grinds made her gag, so she put off brewing a pot. Instead, she went to the bathroom and got the test from the bottom drawer.
A few minutes later, she sat on the bathroom floor in shock. She couldn’t believe it was true. The test was positive. She was pregnant. It felt like a dream; she figured she would wake up any minute...but she didn’t. She wasn’t sure how long she stayed there, thanking God and asking Him to protect the little miracle growing inside her.
When, finally, she thought it was late enough to wake her husband, she went to their bedroom, and found him already awake and sitting up on the bed. Suddenly she found herself at a loss for words: how was she going to relay this amazing news? Knowing she needed to just tell him, lest he worry that her shy countenance was because something was wrong, she said:
“I took the pregnancy test, it was positive. I guess your fortune cookie was right.”

**Why yes, this is how we actually found out about the precious blessing who is currently napping in her crib. **
