Many times, when I sit down to write, I find it very difficult to work on my WIP. So lately, I've taken to using writing prompts, just to write something. Today I got the idea to post some flash fiction - perhaps I'll start doing Flash Tuesdays. (Why yes I did decide that because The Flash is on Tuesdays, though I have yet to watch it.) Anyway...here's the first.
Not Both
The doctor put his hand on her arm and said gently, “You or the baby will survive. Not both. I’m sorry.” Any response she could have given got caught in her throat as the doctor continued, “I’m really sorry to have to tell you that. I’ll leave the two of you alone, I know this is difficult to swallow. Take as much time as you need, we don’t need the room the rest of the day.” She gave the couple a pitying smile and gently closed the door behind her.
“Well, there’s that.” Jennifer put her hands on her large belly, looking down in shock.
“No, that can’t be that. All the medicine today - there has to be a way. I’m not willing to lose either of you.” Chad got up and took his wife in his arms and started whispering a prayer for the two most important people in his life.
As he prayed, Jennifer said a silent prayer herself. However, her’s was one of surrender. Yes, this was a shock, but not because she had a big decision to make. She had made up her mind the moment the words were out of the doctor’s mouth. The only thing she had to decide now was how to tell the man she loved more than life that he was going to be a single father.
